What these numbers mean (full math: Methodology):

• Modified-z (drug cost): how far this provider sits from their (taxonomy × state) peer median, in robust (MAD) units; ≥ 3.5 is the flag threshold.
• Brand cost share: the share of the provider's Part D drug cost that is brand-name rather than generic (0–1).
• Peer group n: number of providers in the same taxonomy-and-state comparison set.

How extreme versus the peer group?

The chart groups available Part D drug-cost observations from the selected example's specialty and state into cost bands. Its counts include the selected provider when present and exclude missing drug costs; they need not equal the full registry peer-group count above. The selected provider is not guaranteed to occupy a band alone. These totals do not establish why a provider's cost differs.
